MARYVILLE, TN– Wittenberg traveled to Tennessee to play a three-game series against Maryville and took to the field twice on Saturday. The Tigers came into the games after winning two of their first three of the season and in both games against the Scots, the bats fell silent early and Maryville was able to take control of each game, winning both, 12-4 and 6-1.
Game One - Maryville 12, Wittenberg 4
The Tiger bats were on fire to start game one, putting up half their runs in the first inning. The bases were loaded for Tommy Chilicki (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy) and he drove home James MacAuley (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI / Grosse Point North) and Alex Nemunaitis (Perrysburg, OH / Ottawa Hills) to take a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the first.
The Scots answered with six runs in the bottom of the first and added another three in the third to take a seven-run lead.
To start the fourth, MacAuley drove home Daniel Gladden (Galena, OH / Olentangy Berlin) on a single. Then, in the fifth, Gavin Lones (Bellefontaine, OH / Indian Lake) got a pinch-hit single to score Chilicki to make the score 9-4.
Maryville scored three more times between the fifth and eighth innings to make the final 12-4 in their favor in game one.
A bright spot for the Tiger's pitching staff was Chris Dawson (Loveland, OH / Milford), as he did not allow a hit in his single inning of work to close out the game. At the plate, Chilicki went 3-4 to lead the team in hits and drove in a couple of runs to pace the team in RBIs as well.
Game Two - Maryville 6, Wittenberg 1
In game two, even though both teams were scoreless in the first inning, the Scots struck for two in the second, one in the fourth and another two in the fifth to build a 5-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Nemunaitis hit a scarifice fly to left field that scored Charlie Marando (Dublin, OH / Scioto) for the Tiger's lone run of the game. Zach Rust (Dublin, OH / Coffman) took the mound in the sixth inning and went three innings, allowing only one run on five hits while recording two strikeouts and a walk.
