Tigers Rally Late to Defeat Maryville 6-3
MARYVILLE, TN – Wittenberg Baseball used a late offensive surge to rally past Maryville 6-3, on Sunday afternoon. The win came a day after the Tigers dropped both ends of a doubleheader, also at Maryville, and it evened its record at 3-3 on the young season.
Trailing 3-1 entering the seventh inning, the Tigers capitalized on defensive errors and timely hitting to take control of the game. With two outs and runners in scoring position, Tommy Chilicki (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy) delivered a clutch two-RBI triple to right field, bringing in Daniel Gladden (Galena, Olentangy Berlin) and James MacAuley (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI / Grosse Point North) to take a 4-3 lead.
The Tiger offense added insurance in the eighth inning when Ashton Newton (Medina, OH / Cloverleaf) opened with a single before Corbin Marshall (Doylestown, OH / Chippewa) tripled down the right field line, bringing in Quintin Applegate (Delaware, OH / Olentangy Berlin). Marshall later scored on a wild pitch, extending the Wittenberg lead to 6-3.
Marshall and Chilicki led the offensive effort for the Tigers. Marshall recorded a double, triple, and an RBI, while Chilicki finished with two RBIs, highlighted by his go-ahead triple in the seventh. Xander Rodriguez (Salinas, PR / Franklin County) also contributed an RBI for Wittenberg.
On the mound, Andrew Rust (Dublin, OH / Coffman) allowed three runs on five hits while striking out three over four innings. Mikey Eickoff (Akron, OH / St. Vincent-St. Mary) was dominant in relief en route to picking up the winning decision, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out one to secure the victory.
Wittenberg returns to action on Wednesday, March 4, when the Tigers travel to face Transylvania.
