Wittenberg Baseball Defeats Cairn, Finishes Myrtle Beach Trip 4-0
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Wittenberg baseball team capped off a perfect Spring Break week in Myrtle Beach with an 11–1 win over Cairn, extending its winning streak to six games and completing the trip with a 4–0 record.
The Tigers were dominant on the mound, allowing just one hit in the contest. Four pitchers combined for the effort, with Mikey Eickhoff (Akron, OH / St. Vincent-St. Mary), Gage Miller (Dayton, OH / Twin Valley South), Tommy Anthony (Toronto, Ontario / Humberside Collegiate Institute), and Tommy Chilicki (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy) each contributing strong innings to secure the win and keep the opposing offense quiet throughout the game.
At the plate, Wittenberg's bats continued their strong start to the season. Alex Nemunaitis (Perrysburg, OH / Ottawa Hills) and Xander Rodriguez (Salinas, PR / Franklin County) each collected three hits in the victory, helping fuel the Tigers' offense.
Rodriguez also went deep again, launching his fourth home run of the season in just 11 games. Daniel Gladden (Galena, OH / Olentangy Berlin) leads the team with five home runs, while Rodriguez and Gladden are tied for the team lead in RBIs with 20 apiece.
Wittenberg's offensive production has been one of the team's biggest strengths early in the season. Through 11 games, seven Tigers with at least 24 at-bats are hitting .340 or better, and four players have already recorded double-digit RBIs.
As a team, the Tigers have scored 117 runs through their first 11 games, averaging nearly 11 runs per contest. Wittenberg owns a .369 team batting average and a .442 on-base percentage to go along with 15 home runs. The Tigers currently rank among the top 15 teams in the nation in batting average.
The pitching staff has also delivered consistent results, combining for a 3.65 ERA while holding opposing hitters to a .222 batting average.
Wittenberg now turns its attention to a challenging matchup this weekend. The Tigers will host a three-game series against No. 19 Christopher Newport, beginning with a single game on Friday, March 13, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, March 14.
