Wittenberg Tops No. 19 Christopher Newport for Seventh Straight Win, 10–4
Newport News, VA - Wittenberg Baseball continued its hot streak with a statement victory, defeating No. 19 Christopher Newport 10–4 to secure its seventh consecutive win.
Wittenberg's offense broke the game open with two explosive innings, while a dominant pitching performance set the tone early.
On the mound, Wade Thewes (Parker, CO / Lutheran) delivered a standout start, throwing seven shutout innings while allowing just four hits and striking out six. Thewes earned the win and improved to 2–1 on the season.
The Tigers broke through in the fourth inning with a six-run rally. Alex Nemunaitis (Perrysburg, OH / Ottawa Hills). sparked the inning with a double, followed by an RBI single from Quintin Applegate (Delaware, OH / Olentangy Berlin) and another RBI single from Landon Turner (Tipp City, OH / Tippecanoe). Later in the inning, Tommy Chilicki (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy) delivered a two-RBI double to cap the big frame and give Wittenberg a commanding lead.
Wittenberg added more offense in the sixth inning with another surge at the plate. Turner led off with a double before home runs from Xander Rodriguez (Salinas, PR / Franklin County) and Nemunaitis pushed the Tigers lead to 10-0.
Several Tigers had big days at the plate. Turner went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Nemunaitis finished 3-for-5 with a home run and a double, and Applegate went 3-for-4. Rodriguez also contributed with a home run during the sixth-inning rally.
With the win, Wittenberg stretches its winning streak to seven games (9-3 overall) and adds an impressive Top-25 victory to its resume. The Tigers will wrap up their three-game series against Christopher Newport with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 11:00 a.m.
