Wilmington, OH - Wittenberg overcame a late tie with a dominant eighth inning to secure a 14-6 victory over Wilmington, improving to 11-5 on the season.
After a back-and-forth game saw the score tied at 6-6 heading into the eighth inning, the Tigers erupted for seven runs to break things open. The rally began with a pair of walks to set the tone before timely hitting took over. Landon Turner (Tipp City, OH / Tippecanoe) delivered a clutch two-RBI single, followed by an RBI double from Alex Nemunaitis (Perrysburg, OH / Ottawa Hills). Tommy Chilicki (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy) added an RBI single, and Quintin Applegate (Delaware, OH / Olentangy Berlin) capped the inning with an RBI knock to put the game out of reach.
Offensively, Wittenberg was led by Applegate, who went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Turner finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Nemuniatis and Chilicki each contributed two hits and drove in runs, with Chilicki also tallying three RBIs.
On the mound, the Tigers received strong performances out of the bullpen. Ben Sells (Urbana, OH / Graham) earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit. Gage Miller (Dayton, OH / Twin Valley South) was also effective, tossing four innings while surrendering only one earned run to keep Wittenberg within striking distance before the late offensive surge.
Wittenberg will look to carry the momentum into its home opener against Hope College on Friday, March 19.
