SPRINGFIELD, OH - The Wittenberg baseball team delivered a dominant performance on its home field, sweeping Hope College in a doubleheader with victories of 12-2 and 15-0.
Game 1: Wittenberg 12, Hope 2 (7 innings)
The Tigers set the tone early and never looked back, erupting for six runs in the first inning to take control. The fast start was highlighted by RBI knocks from Alex Nemunaitis (Perrysburg, OH / Ottawa Hills), Quintin Applegate (Delaware, OH / Olentangy Berlin), Cam Gladden (Galena, OH / Big Walnut), and James MacAuley (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI / Grosse Point North).
Wittenberg continued to apply pressure offensively, finishing with 12 runs. Nemunaitis led the way, going 3-for-4 with a double, while Applegate turned in a perfect 4-for-4 performance with two RBIs. Four additional Tigers added multi-hit efforts in the win.
On the mound, Mason Glen (Cincinnati, OH / Anderson) earned the victory, tossing four innings while allowing four hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts. Riley Kearns (Vermilion, OH / Vermilion) closed out the game in strong fashion, throwing three scoreless innings with three strikeouts to secure the run-rule victory.
Game 2: Wittenberg 15, Hope 0 (7 innings)
The Tigers carried their momentum into game two exploding for nine runs in the first inning to put the game out of reach early. The inning featured extra-base hits and run-producing at-bats, capped by a two-run home run from Nemunaitis.
Wittenberg's offense stayed hot throughout, finishing with 15 runs and launching four home runs in the contest. Nemunaitis, Applegate, Ashton Newton (Medina, OH / Cloverleaf) and Daniel Gladden (Galena, OH / Olentangy Berlin) each went deep as part of the offensive showcase.
Applegate continued his standout day at the plate, finishing the doubleheader 7-for-8 with a home run and five RBIs, while Nemunaitis went 6-for-8 with a home run and two RBIs. Several other Tigers contributed multiple hits, showing a complete team effort.
Andrew Rust (Dublin, OH / Coffman) improved to 3-0 on the season with a strong outing, throwing five scoreless innings while allowing five hits and striking out four. Grant Cline (Circleville, OH / Logan Elm) and Ben Sells (Urbana, OH / Graham) each added a shutout inning in relief to preserve the combined shutout.
