Wittenberg Powers Past Wilmington, 15-9
Springfield, OH - Wittenberg Baseball used timely hitting and key innings of offensive production to secure a 15-9 victory over Wilmington to improve to 15-5 on the season. The win was the second for Wittenberg against the Quakers in less than a week.
After falling behind early against the winless Quakers, the Tigers responded in the second inning when Daniel Gladden (Galena, OH / Olentangy Berlin) launched a two-run home run to even the score at 2-2. Wittenberg continued to build momentum with a pivotal four-run fourth inning. Xander Rodriguez (Salinas, PR / Franklin County) sparked the rally with a double, followed by an RBI single from Landon Turner (Tipp City, OH / Tippecanoe), while two additional runs crossed the plate on Wilmington errors.
The Tigers broke the game open in the sixth inning with five runs. Corbin Marshall (Doylestown, OH / Chippewa) delivered the big hit of the inning with a two-RBI single after a string of base hits put Wittenberg runners in scoring position.
At the plate, four Tigers recorded multi-hit performances as Ashton Newton (Medina, OH / Cloverleaf), Gladden, Turner, and James MacAuley (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI / Grosse Point North) each tallied two hits in the win.
On the mound, Riley Kearns (Vermilion, OH / Vermilion) provided solid relief, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings, while Zach Rust (Dublin, OH / Coffman) matched the effort with 1.2 scoreless frames of his own to help preserve the victory.
Up Next: Wittenberg opens North Coast Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader against DePauw on Saturday, March 28, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. at Carleton Davidson Stadium.
