SPRINGFIELD, OH – Wittenberg's offense came out hot and never slowed down, as the Tigers opened North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play with a dominant doubleheader sweep of DePauw on Saturday. Wittenberg earned two run-rule victories, taking game one 19-3 in seven innings before closing the day with a 15-5 win in eight innings.
With the sweep, the Tigers extended their winning streak to eight straight games and improved to 17-5 overall, including a perfect 7-0 mark at home this season.
Wittenberg totaled 39 hits across the two games, with production coming from the entire lineup. Every starter recorded at least one hit in game two, highlighting the depth of a Tiger offense that continues to rank among the nation's best.
Entering the day, Wittenberg ranked fourth in the country in team batting average at .365. After Saturday's offensive outburst, the Tigers raised their team average to an impressive .377. Wittenberg also remains among the top 15 teams nationally in home runs, now totaling 29 long balls through 22 games.
The Tigers have now scored 244 runs in 22 games this season, averaging 11 runs per contest.
Game One - Wittenberg 19, DePauw 3 (7 innings)
Wittenberg wasted no time setting the tone in the opener, piling on 19 runs while collecting 19 hits in the run-rule victory.
Xander Rodriguez (Salinas, PR / Franklin County) and Daniel Gladden (Galena, OH / Olentangy Berlin) each finished with four hits. Gladden delivered a huge performance, launching two home runs and driving in six runs. Rodriguez added a double and three RBIs. Charlie Marando (Dublin, OH / Scioto) also had a big game, going 3-for-4 with three doubles and two RBIs.
On the mound, Wade Thewes (Parker, CO / Lutheran) earned the win after working five innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out four. Mikey Eickoff (Akron, OH / St. Vincent-St. Mary) was sharp in relief, tossing two scoreless innings while allowing just one hit.
Game Two - Wittenberg 15, DePauw 5 (8 innings)
The Tigers stayed locked in offensively in game two, scoring 15 more runs to complete the sweep.
Alex Nemunaitis (Perrysburg, OH / Ottawa Hills) led the way with a standout 3-for-5 performance, blasting two home runs and driving in five runs. Corbin Marshall (Doylestown, OH / Chippewa) went 4-for-5 with an RBI, while Rodriguez added two hits and a home run.
Andrew Rust (Dublin, OH / Coffman) picked up the win on the mound, throwing four innings and allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out five. Mason Glen (Cincinnati, OH / Anderson) provided strong relief, striking out three batters over 1.1 innings.
