Tigers Strike Early, Hold Off Heidelberg in 9-7 Win
TIFFIN, OH - Wittenberg scored all nine of its runs in the first four innings and held on late as the Tigers defeated Heidelberg 9-7 in a game that was shortened to eight innings due to weather delays.
Wittenberg came out of the gate hot in the opening inning. Tommy Chilicki (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy) got the offense rolling with an RBI single before Corbin Marshall (Doylestown, OH / Chippewa) delivered a two-RBI double to give the Tigers an early 3-0 advantage.
Heidelberg worked its way back into the game and eventually tied it at 5-5, but Marshall came through again with another RBI double to put Wittenberg back in front, 6-5. From there, the Tigers added more offense and maintained control the rest of the way.
Chilicki led the way at the plate with three hits, while Alex Nemunaitis (Perrysburg, OH / Ottawa Hills), Landon Turner (Tipp City, OH / Tippecanoe), and Marshall each recorded two hits apiece.
Out of the bullpen, Mikey Eickoff (Akron, OH / St. Vincent-St. Mary) provided a strong outing to help close out the win, throwing 2.1 innings with two strikeouts to shut the door late.
Career Milestones
James MacAuley (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI / Grosse Point North) and Nemunaitis recently surpassed 150 career hits.
The Tigers will look to carry the momentum forward as they travel to John Carroll for a key North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader on Saturday, April 18.
