SPRINGFIELD, OH – The Wittenberg baseball team put together a dominant showing at the plate on Friday afternoon, sweeping John Carroll in a doubleheader with a combined 32 runs and 36 hits in the two-game set. The Tigers took game one 15-2 before closing the day with a 17-8 victory in game two.
With the sweep, Wittenberg improves to 24-6 overall and 7-1 in conference play. After 30 games, the Tigers continue to lead the nation in team batting average.
Wittenberg's lineup stayed relentless throughout the day, delivering consistent production from top to bottom and continuing to prove why the Tigers are one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the country.
Game 1 – Wittenberg 15, John Carroll 2
The Tigers wasted no time getting on the board in the opener, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looking back. Wittenberg finished with 15 hits in the 15-2 win, setting the tone for the afternoon early.
Alex Nemunaitis (Perrysburg, OH / Ottawa Hills), Landon Turner (Tipp City, OH / Tippecanoe), and James MacAuley (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI / Grosse Point North) each recorded three-hit performances to lead the offense.
On the mound, Wade Thewes (Parker, CO / Lutheran) earned the win after a strong start, tossing five innings while striking out seven and allowing just one earned run. Mikey Eickoff (Akron, OH / St. Vincent-St. Mary) came on in relief and worked a scoreless inning to help seal the victory.
Game 2 – Wittenberg 17, John Carroll 8
The Tigers kept the momentum rolling in game two, erupting for six runs in the first inning and cruising to a 17-4 win behind 21 hits.
Quintin Applegate (Delaware, OH / Olentangy Berlin) had a monster performance at the plate with four hits. Tommy Chilicki (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy) Xander Rodriguez (Salinas, PR / Franklin County) and Ashton Newton (Medina, OH / Cloverleaf) each added three hits, as multiple Tigers contributed throughout the lineup.
Rodriguez capped off the day in the top of the ninth inning with his team-leading 10th home run of the season, continuing his strong year at the plate.
Andrew Rust (Dublin, OH / Coffman) was dominant on the mound, throwing six scoreless innings while striking out three in a lights-out start.
The Tigers return to action Wednesday, April 22 for a doubleheader at Wabash College.
