The Wittenberg University football program will be celebrating its annual Champions Night on Saturday, September 22, 2018, at 7:00 PM.
Springfield, Ohio - The Wittenberg University football program will be celebrating its annual Champions Night on Saturday, September 22, 2018, when the Tigers host the Lords of Kenyon College at 7:00 PM. This year the Tigers will be honoring seven championship teams, spanning from 1958, '63, '73, '78, '88, '98 and '13. These teams claimed five of the 17 Wittenberg OAC titles, along with two of the 15 NCAC crowns.
Wittenberg reached the pinnacle of collegiate football success in the 1970's, capturing its first outright NCAA Championship in 1973. The Tigers finished the '73 season undefeated, taking down San Diego, 21-14, in the semifinal game, before moving on to shutout Juniata, 41-0 in the Alonzo Stagg Bowl. Wittenberg made its return to the national championship game in 1978, edging out Ithaca College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 6-3. The Tigers would move on to defeat Minnesota-Morris, 35-14, in the semifinal game. Making it to their second Stagg Bowl appearance of the decade, Wittenberg earned the runner-up finish in its second matchup of the season against in-state rival Baldwin Wallace, falling by a score of 24-10. The Wittenberg football program was one of the premier defensive teams in the nation throughout the 70's, as they held their opponents to just 9.4 points per game on average.
The Wittenberg Tiger championship teams being honored this year have collected a record of 68-8-3, with a conference record of 46-1-1. The five OAC championship teams tote a record of 47-5-2, with a 29-1-1 overall record in conference play. Three times the Tigers went unbeaten in OAC action, including the 1958, '73 and '78 seasons. After making the jump to the NCAC in 1989, the Tigers two championship teams garnered an overall record of 21-3, with an unblemished conference record of 17-0.
