Tigers Beaten By Visiting John Carroll
SPRINGFIELD, OH - Wittenberg Football dropped to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) with a 44-7 loss to visiting John Carroll, ranked 15th in the most recent d3football.com poll.
The Blue Streaks, who are playing their first season as NCAC members, improved to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the league. John Carroll and DePauw, also ranked in the top-15 by the d3football.com voters, are both unbeaten in conference play currently.
John Carroll scored on every possession of the first half en route to a 30-0 lead by halftime. Wittenberg put together several solid drives in the second half, and the Tigers finally dented the scoreboard with 9:46 left in the game on a 12-yard run by Jeremiah Jones (Tampa, FL / Sumner).
Statistically, Wittenberg got 124 yards passing from quarterback JJ Miller (Amelia, OH / Williamsburg), who had missed the previous game due to injury. Jones, who had previously played almost exclusively on defense as a safety, was the Tigers' leading receiver with two catches for 35 yards, while Henry Jones (Cumming, GA / Landmark Christian) added two receptions for 24 yards. On the ground, TJ Meeks (Springfield, OH / Shawnee) led the way with 35 yards on 12 carries.
Defensively, senior safety Luke Jackson (DeGraff, OH / Indian Lake) turned in another tremendous game, accounting for a whopping 20 tackles, including seven solo stops. Andrew Stamp (Powell, OH / Olentangy Liberty) added eight tackles, and Christopher Hurd (Palm Beach Gardens, FL / Dwyer) contributed 1.5 tackles for loss.
Wittenberg will look to stop its three-game losing streak against Denison at 4 p.m. Saturday, October 18, also at Edwards-Maurer Field.
