Wittenberg Defeats DePauw With Second-Half Scoring Barrage
For one half it was a battle of scoreless Tigers. But in the second half, the Tigers from host Wittenberg came up four goals in less than 20 minutes to improve to 2-0 on the young season and avenge a hard-fought 2-1 overtime loss in Greencastle, Ind. a year ago to the DePauw University Tigers.
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - For one half it was a battle of scoreless Tigers. But in the second half, the Tigers from host Wittenberg came up four goals in less than 20 minutes to improve to 2-0 on the young season and avenge a hard-fought 2-1 overtime loss in Greencastle, Ind. a year ago to the DePauw University Tigers.
Wittenberg got on the board at the 25:51 mark of the second half with a goal by Julia Wickham off an assist from Blair Ufer. That was followed by Ufer's goal off a penalty corner play at the 19:39 mark. Carrie Happ and Rachel Dunn were credited with the double assist.
The Tigers put the game away less than two minutes later as freshman Caroline Mason found the back of the cage for the first time in her collegiate career. Sophomore Melissa Jackson capped the scoring with a tally at the 5:07 mark. The final two scores were both unassisted.
For the second straight game, the Tigers were the aggressors throughout and dominated play around their opponents' cage. The shot totals were 22-3 in favor of Wittenberg and the penalty corners were 11-2 for the homestanding Tigers. DePauw's goalie was forced to come up with 12 saves, nine in the first half, while Wittenberg's Nicole Irvin still has not allowed a collegiate goal, recording her second straight shutout with two saves.
