Tigers Drop Overtime Decision To Denison

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Wittenberg field hockey battled through regulation to hold a scoreless game intact, but it was visiting Denison who scored in overtime to decide the game and send the Tigers to 7-7 overall and 6-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

For 70 minutes, Wittenberg and the Big Red kept each other out of the cage, forcing the game into sudden-victory overtime. With just 1:17 remaining in the first 15-minute overtime period, Denison's Katie McMahon redirected a shot into the Wittenberg goal to end the match.

Wittenberg senior goalkeeper Jenny Schaafsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) made seven saves in the game, including three in the overtime period. She faced 14 total shots from Denison, and her efforts in keeping the Big Red quiet moved her into sixth place in the Wittenberg career saves chart with 332.

Schaafsma surpassed Jen Meyer, who accumulated 326 saves over 60 games from 2001 to 2003.

A key defensive save was also made by junior midfielder Katie Warner (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy).

On offense, senior Elizabeth Dwyer (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue) finished the match with two shots, as did senior Darcey Caciano (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood). FreshmanAlena Mohler (Winston-Salem, NC/Reagan) contributed one shot.

The Tiger defense worked hard, including freshman Jenny Pampreen (Ann Arbor, Mich./Greenhills) and sophomore Mallory Skrobot (Dublin, Ohio/Watterson).

The Tigers, now two games through a regular season-ending six match homestand, host Transylvania at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14. Due to the university's fall break, the Tiger Sports Network will not be available to provide live video, but will still carry live statistics and audio of the match.
