SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – In a non-conference, midweek contest against Washington & Jefferson, Wittenberg field hockey fell to the visitors by a 3-0 final score, dropping to 1-6 overall in the process.
The Tigers were never truly out of the game, with the Presidents holding a slim 1-0 advantage all the way until the last 13 minutes thanks to some solid defensive work by Wittenberg's backfield crew, including sophomore Alena Mohler (Powell, Ohio/Pfafftown Reagan (NC)), who tallied a defensive save.
Washington & Jefferson pounded out their first goal in a scrum with junior goalkeeper Jessica Jensen (Hartland, Wisc./Arrowhead) just in front of the cage in the 33rd minute. The Presidents' Samantha Barcia received the ball close to Jensen and fired off a series of three shots, all turned away but the third, which jumped over Jensen's pads and into the cage.
Barcia also notched the Presidents' second goal, but it was over 25 minutes later on a breakaway drive. Catherine Beaudoin scored the final goal off a penalty corner in the 65th minute.
Jensen tallied 12 saves in the content, and on the offensive side, sophomore Megan Loofbourrow (Prospect, Ky./Ballard) came off the bench to lead the team with three shots, while four players posted one each.
The Tigers resume their North Coast Athletic Conference schedule at home against Oberlin this Thursday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. at Edwards-Maurer Field. Head to WittenbergTigers.com for live statistics, audio and video of the contest on the Tiger Sports Network.
