Kenyon Mounts Second Half Attack To Overcome Tigers

The Wittenberg field hockey team fell to conference-leading Kenyon College 5-2 on Saturday, but only after playing an impressive first half against the Ladies.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Wittenberg field hockey team fell to conference-leading Kenyon College 5-2 on Saturday, but only after playing an impressive first half against the Ladies.

Through one period of play it was 1-1 as the Tigers outshot Kenyon 11-10 in the first 35 minutes and took four penalty corners to Kenyon's one. After the Ladies got on the board first, freshman Carlijn van den Berg (Zwolle, The Netherlands/Thorbecke) scored an unassisted goal to even the score with less than three minutes left in the first half.

The Tigers led for a few minutes in the second half after van den Berg scored her second goal in just 4:01 of gametime, again unassisted.

Over the final 30 minutes, however, Kenyon went on a 4-0 run to close out the game. The score did not preclude some solid defensive play: sophomore Michelle Murray (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and senior Alena Mohler (Powell, Ohio/Pfafftown Reagan (NC)) each made clutch defensive saves.

van den Berg led the offense with seven shots, while senior Casey Fry (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea), senior Beth Warning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) and senior Megan Loofbourrow (Prospect, Ky./Ballard) all had two shots apiece.

Sophomore Sarah Brownell (Oconomowoc, Wis./University Lake School) put together a nice day in front of the cage, making 14 saves, including six in the first half and eight in the second.

The Tigers next host Ohio Wesleyan at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Edwards-Maurer Field.
