Field Hockey Posts Another NCAC Win
SPRINGFIELD, OH – Wittenberg's field hockey team has been on a roll of late, picking up its third win in a row, this time defeating Transylvania, 2-1, on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Edwards-Maurer Field in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) matchup.
The Tigers heard from a new country today as international player and sophomore Lauren Singery (Johannesburg, South Africa / Bryanston) caught fire to score both their goals. It was the first two goals of her young career at Wittenberg.
Singery scored her first goal at the 7:56 mark of the game, off an assist by Emily Owens (Stow, OH / Stow-Munroe Falls). After neither team could find the cage in the second period, Transylvania answered Singery's goal at the 32:45 mark in the game in the third period to make it 1-1.
However, Wittenberg quickly recovered with Singery going on the warpath and knocking in goal No. 2, less than two minutes later, unassisted to give the Tigers the edge once again.
Witt's defense tightened up and held the Pioneers scoreless the rest of the way to hang onto the victory. With the win, the Tigers improve to 3-8 on the season and 3-1 in the NCAC to remain in a five-way tie for second in the conference behind Denison, which is 5-0. Transylvania falls to 0-9 overall and 0-5 in the NCAC.
Owens and Singery each had four total shots while Devyn Groves (La Grange, KY / Oldham County Senior) had a team-high five to lead the Tigers. Wittenberg had a total of 21 shots – seven in each of the first three periods, 10 shots were on goal, and they also had eight penalty corners in the win. The Pioneers tallied five total shots, two penalty corners, eight saves, and 30 fouls.
Goalkeepers Essence Wyse (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy) and Taryn Toburen (Lititz, PA / Warwick) shared time in the goal, with Wyse picking up two saves and Toburen getting one.
Next up, Wittenberg will host DePauw on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 4 p.m.
