Field Hockey Picks Up 1-0 Victory in Overtime
SPRINGFIELD, OH – Wittenberg's field hockey team got to ring the bell signaling a home win after downing Allegheny, 1-0, in exciting fashion on Saturday, Oct. 18, in an afternoon overtime match at Edwards-Maurer Field, part of the Health, Wellness & Athletics Complex.
Both teams had an abundance of opportunities during regulation, but the Tigers' Devyn Groves (La Grange, KY / Oldham County Senior) was finally able to break through the Allegheny defense and tally the winning goal at the 7:44 mark of the overtime period in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) contest. She scored unassisted after a penalty corner on a shot from the left and just past the goalkeeper. It was her only shot of the afternoon, but it was good for the game-winner.
Wittenberg goalkeeper Taryn Toburen (Lititz, PA / Warwick), a freshman, went the distance and turned in a phenomenal game, diving all over the place to collect 16 saves and her first career shutout.
It was the fourth win of the season for the Tigers, now 4-9 overall and tied with Kenyon at 4-2 in the NCAC. Denison, DePauw, and Ohio Wesleyan sit atop the standings, all with just one conference loss. Allegheny is now 2-8 on the season and 0-5 in the NCAC.
Maddy Krasnow (Bexley, OH / Bexley) led the team in shots with seven total and three on goal. Aysha Johnson (Kettering, OH / Fairmont) added five, two on goal.
Wittenberg had 17 total shots on the day, eight on goal, while Allegheny had 18, and 16 on goal. Each team committed a number of fouls, with Witt getting whistled 43 times to 37 for the visitors. The Tigers also held the edge in penalty corners, 11-9.
Next up, Wittenberg will take on Washington & Jefferson for an NCAC match at 11 a.m. Sunday, October 19, also at Edwards-Maurer Field.
