Tigers Suffer Heartbreaking OT Loss to Ohio Wesleyan on Senior Day
SPRINGFIELD, OH – Wittenberg Field Hockey suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss to visiting Ohio Wesleyan on Senior Recognition Day in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) contest at Edwards-Maurer Field, part of the Health, Wellness & Athletics Complex.
Ohio Wesleyan came into the match in a three-way tie for first place in the NCAC with DePauw and Denison, while Wittenberg wasn't far behind at 5-2.
The Tigers put on a tough defensive performance against Ohio Wesleyan. Neither team could break through for a score in regulation, pushing the match into overtime. After having ample opportunities throughout the final two frames only to fall short against the fine play of Wittenberg goalkeeper Taryn Toburen (Lititz, PA / Warwick), the Battling Bishops were able to strike for a goal at the 5:54 mark of the first overtime period and claim the 1-0 victory. Toburen went the distance in the match, picking up 11 saves on 12 shots faced.
With the loss, Wittenberg drops to 5-10 overall and 5-3 in the NCAC, good for a fourth-place tie with Kenyon. The win allows Ohio Wesleyan to remain at the top of the conference at 6-1, while improving to 8-5 overall.
Ohio Wesleyan had 21 total shots (nine in the fourth and three in overtime) to just two for Wittenberg. The Battling Bishops also led in penalty corners, 14-2, and in fouls, 54-49.
During pre-game activities, Wittenberg celebrated its four seniors in Devyn Groves (La Grange, KY / Oldham County Senior), Fiona Isbell (Columbus, Ohio), Morgan Myers (York, PA / West York Area), and Emily Owens (Stow, OH / Stow-Munroe Falls). Groves is graduating with her bachelor's degree in sport management with a minor in religion. Isbell is graduating with her bachelor's degree in political science with a minor in women's studies. Myers is graduating with her bachelor's degree in management with a minor in entrepreneurship. And Owens is graduating with her bachelor's degree in biology on a pre-dentistry track.
Next up, Wittenberg will be on the road again for its final regular season match at Kenyon on Saturday, Nov. 1, at noon. The winner of that game will secure the fourth and final spot in the 2025 NCAC Tournament.
