Tiger Field Hockey Poised for Another Fine Season
Even after graduating nine seniors from a squad that exceeded expectations in Head Coach Brighid Kortyna’s first season at the helm, Wittenberg Field Hockey hopes to build on that momentum in 2025.
The Tigers turned in a stellar 11-3 overall record last season after Kortyna, Wittenberg class of 2018, took the reins following four seasons as a standout player and five seasons as an assistant coach in the program. The key to the season was a tremendous start as the Tigers won their first nine games in 2024 en route to a third-place finish in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) regular-season standings with an 8-2 record.
After Wittenberg saw its season come to a dramatic close with a 1-0 overtime loss to second-seeded Denison in the NCAC Tournament semifinals, Kortyna and Assistant Coach Maddie Passarella were named NCAC Coaching Staff of the Year.
The Tigers have plenty of talent back on the roster in 2025, led by senior forward Devyn Groves (La Grange, KY / Oldham County Senior), who led Wittenberg with 11 goals, including four game-winners, and 26 total points on the season. Her performance earned her second-team All-NCAC honors. She is among four returning starters in 2025, also including senior midfielder Emily Owens (Stow, OH / Stow-Munroe Falls), junior defender Sofia Didone (Campbell, CA / Westmont), and junior midfielder Maddy Krasnow (Bexley, OH / Bexley). Other key contributors who will be asked assume bigger roles this year include junior defender Aysha Johnson (Kettering, OH / Fairmont), sophomore midfielder Jamie Triolo (Haskell, NJ / Lakeland Regional), junior defender Ebony Wyse (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy), junior defender Alexis Vazquez (Cypress, TX / Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart), sophomore forward Lexi Cutler (Farmington Hills, MI / North Farmington), junior forward Londyn McCoy (Galena, OH / Olentangy Berlin), junior defender Lauren Singery (Johannesburg, South Africa / Bryanston), and senior forward Morgan Myers (York, PA / West York Area).
In goal, the lone returner letterwinner is junior Essence Wyse (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy), who appeared in four games a year ago.
Wittenberg opens at home against Rhodes at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, followed by another home game the following day, this time opposite Centre at 12 p.m. NCAC play begins at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, with a key early season showdown at Denison. The 17-game regular-season schedule will come to a close with a noon match on Saturday, Nov. 1, at Kenyon.
