Tigers Cap Zimmerman Classic With Narrow Loss To Alma
After falling behind by 16 points in first half, Wittenberg unable to complete the comeback in tournament consolation game.
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - For the second straight night, the Wittenberg Tigers couldn't find the range in the closing moments. As a result, Wittenberg finished fourth in its own in-season tournament for the first time in its 32-year history following a 56-50 loss to Alma.
The loss came on the heels of a 77-69 setback against Waynesburg and dropped the Tigers to 3-8 on the season. Alma, which lost in the opening round to Wilmington, improved to 2-9.
The key to the game was a 14-0 run by Alma midway through the first half that expanded a two-point lead into a commanding 33-17 advantage. The Tigers closed to within seven by halftime but could get no closer than four points in the second half.
Sophomore Jaelin Williams (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) hit a lay-up with 36 seconds remaining to make the score 54-50, but Alma's Scott Nikodemski canned a pair of free throws five seconds later. From that point, the Tigers missed two three-pointers and two free throws as the Scots held on for the win.
Williams led Wittenberg with 15 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots, while sophomore Cody Phillippi (Xenia, Ohio/Xenia) added 10 points and seven rebounds.
