Tigers Go Cold in Road Loss to Oberlin
OBERLIN, OH - Wittenberg Men's Basketball found points tough to come by in a road loss at North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rival Oberlin as the Tigers were held to a season-low 29.3 percent shooting in a 52-45 loss.
The loss was Wittenberg's third in the last four games as the Tigers fell to 11-5 overall and 4-3 in the NCAC. Oberlin, which won for just the 10th time in 101 all-time meetings with Wittenberg, improved to 9-7 overall and 2-5 in the league. While the Yeomen trail the overall series with the Tigers by a wide margin, Oberlin has now won three of the last four meetings between the two teams.
Oberlin led this one almost from start to finish. After the two teams traded three-pointers in the opening minutes, the Yeomen jumped on top with an 12-2 run that eventually expanded to a 29-9 bulge with about one minute remaining before halftime. A three-pointer from Noah Frayer (Odenton, MD / SPIRE Academy) in the waning seconds made it a 15-point deficit going into the locker room.
After making just six of 30 shots in the first half, Wittenberg was able to find some offense over the final 20 minutes. It wasn't enough, however, as the Tigers pulled to within six points twice in the final three minutes but could get no closer. The Yeomen hit 9 of their last 10 free throws over the final 2:22 to close out the victory.
Frayer led Wittenberg with 15 points, and Tyler Galluch (Springfield, OH / Catholic Central) added 10 points off the bench. More than half of the Tigers' shots in the game were three-pointers, with just five of 33 attempts finding the bottom of the net, and Wittenberg was similarly on the struggle bus from the free throw line, making 6-of-11 attempts.
Eddie Brown (Lewis Center, OH / Olentangy Orange) led Wittenberg in rebounding with 10, followed by Galluch and Cal Bavineau (Dexter, MI / Dexter) with six boards each. Kyle Kenney (Centerville, OH / Centerville) was tops in assists with three.
As the teams near the midway point of the 2025-26 NCAC title chase, Wittenberg is tied for fourth place with DePauw at 4-3, just one-half game back of John Carroll at 5-3. Wabash, which will visit Wittenberg on Wednesday, Jan. 21, for a 7 p.m. tip-off in Pam Evans Smith Arena, leads the way at 6-1, followed by Denison at 5-2.
