Tigers Top Field At Perennial Power DePauw
The Wittenberg Tigers stepped back into NCAA Division III competition for the first time in the spring 2010 season and came away with an impressive six-stroke win on the home course of perennial powerhouse DePauw.
DANVILLE, Ind. — The Wittenberg Tigers stepped back into NCAA Division III competition for the first time in the spring 2010 season and came away with an impressive six-stroke win on the home course of perennial powerhouse DePauw.
The Tigers paced the six-team field with a two-day total of 592. Wittenberg carded the best team score on each day, following a Day 1 295 with a 297 on Sunday to defeat DePauw by six strokes. Third-place Benedictine was a whopping 39 strokes off the pace set by Wittenberg, which heads back into North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action Saturday and Sunday, April 17-18, at Springfield Country Club.
Freshman Craig Osterbrock (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) took second place in the individual competition with a two-day total of 141. He had a chance to equal DePauw's Nick Reardon - who posted matching 70s for a 140 - but Osterbrock bogeyed his final hole on Sunday. Still, he finished with a collegiate-best 68 in the closing round.
Sophomore Ben Smith (North Bend, Ohio/Elder) was also stellar in both rounds, following up his collegiate-best 71 on Day 1 with a 76 for 147 and sole possession of third place. Sophomore Ricky Boerner (Hilliard, Ohio/Watterson) followed with a 152 for sixth place and junior Bleu George (Lancaster, Ohio/Fisher Catholic)rounded out the Tigers' top finishers with a seventh-place finish. He carded rounds of 75 and 78 for a 153.
