HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. — It took three tournaments and a collection of nationally ranked teams for the Wittenberg Tigers to finish out of the top spot in 2011-12. The Tigers, winners of their first two 2011-12 competitions, placed ninth in a loaded 18-team field at the NCAA Fall Preview/Gordin Invitational.
Wittenberg finished with a three-day total of 922 after carding rounds of 305, 316 and 301. Methodist won the event with a team score of 889, followed distantly by the rest of the field. Illinois Wesleyan and Guilford tied for second place with matching totals of 903.
Uncharacteristically, all five Wittenberg players shot a round in 80s during the tournament, hindering the team's hopes of making a bigger impression against the nation's top-ranked squads. Junior Craig Osterbrock (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) led the way individually for the Tigers with a 228, good for 16th place.
Freshman Alex Andrews (Kirtland, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) and sophomoreJack Uecker (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) posted matching 234s, good for a tie for 44th place, and sophomore Ben Hogenkamp (Minster, Ohio/Minster) added a 236 to place 53rd. Senior Jordan Millice (Cable, Ohio/Triad) rounded things out with a 240, good for 75th place.
The Tigers have no time to lick their wounds as they welcome a strong field for the newly re-named Maurer-Rosencrans Invitational at Windy Knoll Golf Club in Springfield. Teams are scheduled to tee off around 1 p.m. Saturday, followed by a shotgun start for the entire field at 9 a.m. Sunday.
