Playing in a field stacked with many of the top teams in NCAA Division III and a host of NCAA Division II and NAIA scholarship programs, the Wittenberg Tigers made the cut and finished a respectable 13th in the final standings.
JACKSONVILLE, NC — Playing in a field stacked with many of the top teams in NCAA Division III and a host of NCAA Division II and NAIA scholarship programs, the Wittenberg Tigers made the cut and finished a respectable 13th in the final standings.
The field was trimmed to 16 teams after the second day of competition, with the remaining 15 teams playing on the Scarlet Course of the Paradise Point Golf Club on the third and final day. The top 16 teams decided the overall championship on the Gold Course on Day 3.
Methodist won the event with a mind-boggling team score of 20-under-par 836 to finish 16 strokes ahead of Oglethorpe. Defending national champion Greensboro tied with scholarship program South Carolina-Beaufort for third place at 855.
Wittenberg placed 13th with a three-day total of 880. The Tigers carded rounds of 293, 284 and 303 as all five players in the line-up broke 80 all three days, led by sophomore Tyler Yaple (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome), who posted a personal collegiate-best 67 in the second round. Yaple topped the Tigers with a three-day total of 218 to finish in a tie for 32nd place.
He was followed by sophomore Ben Hogenkamp (Minster, Ohio/Minster), who went 71, 71, 78 to finish in 38th place with a total of 220. Freshman Alex Andrews (Kirtland, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) was right behind with three straight 74s to place 45th with a total of 222. Junior Craig Osterbrok (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) and sophomore David Wetterich (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) rounded things out for Wittenberg with matching totals of 225, good for a tie for 58th place.
In the final standings, Wittenberg finished ahead of four nationally ranked teams, including No. 1 Guilford, and two North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rivals (DePauw and Allegheny). The Tigers came into the weekend ranked 25th in the latest National Golf Coaches Association rankings.
