DELAWARE, Ohio — The stretch run of the 2011-12 season began for the Wittenberg men's golf team with a fifth-place finish in the Strimer Memorial Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University at Oakhaven Golf Club.
The 25th-ranked Tigers stood second after the first day, trailing surprising Wooster by one stroke after covering the par-71, 6,830-yard in a team total of 311 strokes. The round was played in rainy, windy, cool conditions.
But on Day 2, the Tigers were unable to take advantage of the dry, windy conditions, dropping to 318. That opened the door for Columbus State CC to move into the top spot, shooting a 301 to finish with a two-day total of 615. The host Battling Bishops took second, six strokes back, followed by Denison at 623 and Wittenberg at 629.
Individually, Wittenberg was paced by sophomore Jack Uecker (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary), who carded rounds of 77 and 78 to place 10th with a score of 155. He was followed closely by junior Craig Osterbrock (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) and sophomore Tyler Yaple (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) with matching 156s to finish tied for 14th.
Freshman Alex Andrews (Kirtland, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) rounded out the Tiger scorers with a 162 to place 42nd.
