Tigers Shake Off Rust in First Competitions of Spring
Savannah, GA- The Tigers traveled to Savannah to compete in their first competitions since October as the Tigers measured themselves against a tough field of 19 teams in the Savannah Invitational at the Club at Savannah Harbor and the 'B' team competed in the Port City Classic at Savannah Country Club, both hosted by Berry. After an impressive first two rounds on Day 1, the Tigers struggled on Day 2 of the Savannah Invitational to finish at 47 over par, for 19th out of 20 teams. At the Port City Classic, the Tiger B team finished the three-round event in 14th place out of 20 teams.
Both events included many of the top-ranked teams in NCAA Division III, including the Tigers, who were 12th in the final fall poll.
Savannah Invitational
Huntingdon took the top spot, ending up 30-under par, shooting at least eight-under twice. Oglethorpe played a stellar third round to jump into a tie for second at 6-under par with Wahington & Lee.
In round one, Mikey Schutte (Cincinnati, OH / Elder) led the Tigers by shooting a 72 even par and shot a one-over 73 in the second. Mitch Bolte (Newark, OH / Newark) was only two-over par witha 74 in round one and finished off the first day with a 75, three-over par. Griffin Turner (Enon, OH / Greenon) shot a four-over par score of 76 in the first round and his second round score reached 80 to be eight-over. Wittenberg's fourth golfer for round one was Alex Rath (Dublin, OH / Scioto), who carded a 6-over par score of 78. In round two, Mark Sulek (Delaware, OH / Hayes) was the fourth golfer to score for the Tigers, as he stepped up to have the second-best round of the Tiger golfers with a two-over 74. The first round the Tigers shot a combined +12 in the first round and a second round of +14 to total 22 over-par and put them in 14th.
On day two and round three, Schutte continued to play well, carding a 76 to be four over and Sulek and Rath both finished with a 5-over 77. Turner rounded out the third round with a 79, improving from his 80 just a day prior. Overall, the Tiger's round three score was 21-over par to end the tournament at 43 over-par to finish 19th out of the 20 teams competing.
Port City Classic
Carnegie Mellon's 'B' team finished first with a three round score of 24 over-par. The Tartans were followed by Centre at 34-over-par. Wittenberg's B team shot 76-over-par over the tournament's three rounds.
Charlie Parker (Swanbourne, Australia / Scotch College) led the way for the Tigers as he carded a three-round score of 14-over-par, highlighted by even par finish in the third round, to stand 35th in the final standings. He was followed by Owen Williams (Plymouth, MI / Detroit Catholic Central) in 65th with a score of 21-over-par, David Walterhouse (Statham, GA / Bethlehem Christian Academy) in 67th with a score of 22-over-par, and the tandem of Bradley Hinkel (Springboro, OH / Springboro) and Caleb Domitrovich (McDonald, OH / McDonald) in a tie for 71st with a 23-over-par final score.
