Men's Golf Places Well in Stacked Field
Pinehurst, NC-The Wittenberg men's golf team competed in two seperate Invitationals, as the 'A' team took part in the Tiger Invitational and the 'B' team played in the Hampden-Sydney Invitational at Foxfire.
Tiger Invitational
The Tigers finished tied for 13th at the with Rochester at 32 over par in a field full of team in the Clippd top 25, with four of the top five ranked teams competing. In the first two rounds, the Tigers perfromed extremely well, shooting 7 over par as a team in the first two rounds before finishing the third round at 18 over par. Methodist ran away with first place at 13 under par and Huntingdon was the other team to shoot under par at 7 under, as Sewanee and Emory tied for third place, shooting 2 over.
The top finisher for the Tigers was Mikey Schutte (Cincinnati, OH / Elder), finishing in 30th, as he shot on even par 72 in round one, 2 over par 74 in round two and finished round three at a 73 one over to finish 3 over par. Mitch Bolte (Newark, OH / Newark) took 43rd overall with first round of 71 to be one under par, and followed it up with an even par 72 and then shot a third round 78 ato be 6 over and total 5 over par over three rounds. Freshman Charlie Parker (Swanbourne, Australia / Scotch College) was the next best finisher for Wittenberg at 49th with a total of 8 over par as he carded a first round 4 over par 76, a second round one over 73 and closed out the invitational with a three over par 75. Mark Sulek (Delaware, OH / Hayes) scored in the first round for the Tigers with a four over par 76 and ended up finishing 87th in the field with second round 77 for five over and thrid round 82 and ten over to finish 19 over par. Scoring for Wittenberg in rounds two and four was Caleb Domitrovich (McDonald, OH / McDonald). He carded at first round 80 to be eight over, then improved to a four over 76 in round two and carded an eight over 20 again to finish at 20 over and 88th in the field.
Hampden-Sydney Invitational at Foxfire
The men's golf 'B' team took 7th place in a field of 14 teams that consisted of both 'A' and 'B' teams competing over two rounds. Carnegie Mellon's 'B' took first at 8 under and Southern Virginia took second at 21 over par, while Denison closed out the top three right behind, shooting a 22 over par. With the Tiger 'B' team taking 7th, they shot a first round 27 over and improved in round two, at 13 over to finish 40 over par.
The top finisher for the Tigers was Bradley Hinkel (Springboro, OH / Springboro) as he was 30th overall with a first round four over 76 and shot a 74 to be 2 over par at 74 in the second round to finish at 6 over par. Owen Williams (Plymouth, MI / Detroit Catholic Central) finished 10 over par overall and placed 41st with a first round 80 to be eight over and improved to a two over 74 in round two. Freshman Zac Thompson (Springfield, OH / Catholic Central) finished in 49th as he shot a first round eight over par 80, followed up by a second round 75 to be three over and collectively finsih 11 over par. Griffin Turner (Enon, OH / Greenon) was the nextr finisher tied for 57th as he shot a four over 76 in the first round and 9 over 81 in the second round to finish at 13 over par. Will Tracey (Alexandia, VA / Bishop Ireton) was also tied for 57th as he started with a first round 11 over par 83, but improved in the second to shoot a 74 for two over par and finish 13 over par in the end. In 67th was David Walterhouse (Statham, GA / Bethlehem Christian Academy), shooting a 83 and 76 to close out the invitational at 15 over. Finishing at 22 over in 96th was Alex Rath (Dublin, OH / Scioto) as he carded a first round 89 and second round 77. The final Tiger in the field was Isaac Gundolf (New Carlisle, OH / Northwestern), sooting a consistent 12 over par 84 in each round to finish 24 over par.
Next up for men's golf is over four weeks without competing until they travel to Alabama on April 6 and 7 to compete in the Captiol City Classic, hosted by Huntingdon.
