Wittenberg University Vice President and Director of Athletics and Recreation Brian Agler '80 welcomed David Wetterich back to his alma mater to serve as the head coach of the men's and women's golf programs prior to the 2022-23 season.

"We are extremely excited to bring back David to Wittenberg to lead our very successful golf program," Agler said. "David was a standout competitor here, and throughout the interview process he showed his passion for the program and the University. I'm confident he will work tirelessly to make and keep both our women's and men's teams competitive at the national level, but more importantly, help give our student-athletes a tremendous experience."

In his first year at the helm of the program (2022-23), Wetterich led the Tiger men to the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) title, as Matthew Mattioli earned the Bob Nye Award as NCAC Medalist and J.F. Aber won the Dick Gordin Award as the NCAC Player of the Year. The Tigers finished 13th in the NCAA Division III Tournament with a four-round score of 1185 (+33), led by Mattioli in 21st place. He and Aber both earned All-America honors, while Mattioli, Aber, Evan DiSanto, and Nicklaus Pidgeon all picked PING All-Region awards. In 2023-24, the Tiger finished second in the NCAC Tournament and earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament as Aber repeated as NCAC Player of the Year and also collected the Bob Nye Award as well after breaking the program record in the event with a three-day total of 205. Aber went on to claim all-region and All-America awards as he led the Tigers to a 15th-place finish in the national competition.

In 2024-25, the Tigers re-claimed their spot at the top of the NCAC Tournament and followed that with a 16th-place finish in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Mitch Bolte earned NCAC Newcomer of the Year, All-Region, and NCAA Division III All-Freshman Team honors to lead Wittenberg. And in 2025-26, the Tigers nearly pulled off a late rally at the NCAA Division III Tournament before finishing second. While the team's four-year streak of national event appearances came to an end, Mikey Schutte advanced as an individual competitor.

On the women's side, Wetterich led the Tigers to a third-place NCAC Tournament finish in the 2022-23 season, followed by fifth place in 2023-24. Ellen Frame, Izzy Selby, and Hilary Humbaugh all earned All-NCAC honors in 2023, and Selby and Humbaugh followed that with all-conference awards in 2024. In 2024-25, the Tigers moved back up to third place in the conference tourney, with four players earning league awards, and in 2025-26, Wittenberg finished fourth, with three players getting postseason recognition.

After graduating from Wittenberg in 2014 with a degree in marketing and a minor in sports management, Wetterich pursued a career as a touring professional. Competing on PGA Tour Canada and various mini-tours throughout the country, Wetterich also worked as a caddie at Calusa Pines Golf Club in Naples, Florida, recording more than 200 loops over the span of two winters. From 2019 to 2022, Wetterich served as the host and tournament coordinator of the Clovernook Open, a 54-hole stroke play professional golf tournament and pro-am hosted at Clovernook Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio. During the week of the event, the tournament hosts a clinic for the First Tee of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

While at Wittenberg, Wetterich was a member of four consecutive NCAC championship teams. In 2012 he earned second-team All-America honors after he carded a team-best three-under-par 69 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament to help Wittenberg rally to make the 15-team cut by a single stroke. Wetterich added rounds of 78, 76, and 74 for a four-round total of 297 to become just the eighth player in program history to finish in the top-15 at an NCAA Tournament.
