SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers gave North Coast Athletic Conference rival Kenyon all it could handle in a spirited match at Edwards-Maurer Field. In an exciting end-to-end match filled with sensational defense, the Tigers could not complete one final run at the Lords in a 7-5 loss.
An early Tiger run built a 3-1 lead early in the second quarter on the strength of two goals from sophomore midfielder Chris Gipson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley). The Lords responded with three of their own before halftime, however, and would never trail again.
Twice in the second half, the Red and White leveled the score on goals from sophomore Brady Christensen (Medina, Ohio/Medina), but could not reclaim complete control of the game.
The story of the contest came on the defensive end, where sophomore netminderMark DeOliveira (East Hanover, NJ/East Hanover) stymied the Lords with 12 saves, including several from point-blank range. In front of DeOliveria's net, juniorDanny Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) spearheaded an inspired defensive effort with nine ground balls.
The loss drops the Tigers to 5-3 and 0-2 in the NCAC, with another conference foe waiting on deck with Oberlin coming to visit Springfield on Saturday, April 11 for a 1 p.m. opening faceoff.
