Lacrosse Legend Steve Whitman Inducted Into Ohio Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame

Springfield, Ohio — Steve Whitman, Wittenberg University Class of 1976, will become the second Tiger men's lacrosse player to gain entry into the Ohio Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame when he is inducted at a dinner and ceremony on Saturday, June 11, at the University Plaza Hotel in Columbus, Ohio.

Whitman is one of four members of the class of 2011 to be inducted into the Ohio Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame, which was founded in 1994. Female and male high school All-America honorees will also be recognized during the event, which includes a reception and a formal dinner.

Whitman, who will not be present at the banquet, follows in the footsteps of former Wittenberg teammate, Ron Klawitter, class of 1973, who was one of five individuals inducted into the Ohio Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame in 2009. The rest of this year's class is Bill Polasky, an All-American midfielder at Ohio State from 1963-66, former Oberlin College Men's Lacrosse Head Coach Cliff Stevenson and former Ohio Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association Commissioner Ernie Hartong.

A four-year starter for the Tiger men's lacrosse program (1972-75), Whitman played the all-important goalkeeper position as well as anyone in the nation. Named team MVP his senior year in 1975, Whitman was a two-time second-team All-Midwest District honoree and a Division II-III honorable mention All-America as a senior.

Whitman's 29 saves in an upset victory at Morgan State in 1975 ranks as the second-highest total in a game in school history, and he holds multiple season and career goalkeeping school records. A native of South Orange, N.J., Whitman currently lives in LaJolla, Calif. He was inducted into Wittenberg's Athletics Hall of Honor in 2007.
