Chatham Cruises to 17-8 Victory Over Witt in Men’s Lacrosse
PITTSBURGH, PA. – A potent offensive attack combined with strong defense helped host Chatham cruise past Wittenberg, 17-8, Tuesday afternoon, March 4, in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest at UPMC Graham Field in Pittsburgh.
Wittenberg stayed with Chatham throughout most of the first half, falling behind 5-3 after one and 6-4 late in the second. However, Chatham scored a goal with just 1:38 remaining in the first half to go up 7-4 at the intermission. The score was the first of 10-straight unanswered goals by the Cougars that would blow the door wide open and give them a 16-4 lead early in the fourth. Wittenberg halted the skid by scoring at the 11:47 mark to make it 16-5. The Cougars hit the back of the net once more with just over four minutes remaining, but Wittenberg was able to hit twice more before time ran out to come within nine.
Chatham scored five in the first, two in the second, six in the third, and four more in the fourth, while Witt placed three on the board in the first, one in the second, and four in the fourth.
Bright spots for the Tigers included having two players turn a hat trick and two other players scoring their first goals of the season. Tripp Salowich (Plymouth, MI / Canton) and Ty Harris (Cincinnati, OH / Sycamore) each scored three times on the day, while Tyler Bast (Noblesville, IN / Hamilton Southeastern) and Noah Baker (Hiram, OH / Crestwood) scored for the first time this season.
Harris led the team in shots with 10 total, seven on goal, while Ethan Pac (Greenwood, IN / Cathedral) took six, three on goal, and Salowich added four shots, three on goal. Charlie Frederick (Chagrin Falls, OH / Chagrin Falls) led the team in ground balls with 7. Harris, Pac, and Charlie Boucuvalas (Oakwood, OH / Oakwood) each had an assist.
Goalkeeper Griffin Howell (Whitestown, IN / Zionsville Community) tallied 14 saves in the loss, which puts Wittenberg at 0-4 on the season. Chatham goes to 3-1 overall.
