Greencastle, IN – Despite an early deficit, the Wittenberg men's soccer team fought back in a 3-2 road loss to DePauw on Tuesday night. The Tigers cut a two-goal gap with a late push in the match, but they couldn't find the game-tying goal in this key North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) battle.
After conceding an early goal in the third minute, the Tigers weathered DePauw's strong start and began to find rhythm midway through the first half. Aidan Rice (Dublin, OH / Saint Charles) kept Wittenberg in the match with several key stops, finishing with four saves on the night. Though DePauw added a goal late in the half, Wittenberg responded when Christopher Meyer (Toledo, OH / St. Francis) converted with a penalty kick in the 44th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into halftime.
In the second half, DePauw extended its lead to 3-1 in the 52nd minute, but Wittenberg refused to back down. Asher Donahue (Muncie, IN / Burris Laboratory School) added another goal in the 70th minute on an assist from James D'Isidoro (Twinsburg, OH / Twinsburg) to make it 3-2. Wittenberg continued to pressure DePauw in the closing minutes, earning multiple scoring chances, but the Tigers couldn't find the equalizer before time expired.
With two conference games left the Tigers, who currently hold records of 7-4-5 overall and 0-4-2 in the NCAC, will look to regain their early season momentum with a pair of home games against John Carroll and Wooster.
