CHARLOTTE, NC — The Wittenberg Tigers kicked off a busy Spring Break week with a hard-fought 5-4 loss to host Johnson C. Smith University.
The win moved the Tigers to 3-2 on the 2009-10 season. It was the first of a six matches in six days stretch, including four matches in Hilton Head, SC, followed by a contest against Belmont Abbey back in Charlotte on March 13.
After the Tigers picked up wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to start the match, Johnson C. Smith, the alma mater of Wittenberg Head Coach Justin Stuckey, rallied to take the match in the singles competition. The key courts were the Nos. 2 and 3 singles positions, where juniorBobby Fisher (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln) won a narrow 6-4, 7-5 decision on the second court but sophomore Stephane Antwi (Rosedale, NY/McClancy Memorial) came up just short in a 6-4, 7-5 decision.
Earlier, Antwi had teamed with senior Craig Lods (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) at No. 2 doubles for a win, while Fisher was the team's lone double-winner on the day after pairing with freshman Stuart Zorn (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) at No. 3 doubles. Freshman Shaun Byrnes (Westlake, Ohio/St. Edward) rounded things out with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles.
