HILTON HEAD, SC — The Wittenberg Tigers put the finishing touches on an unbeaten 2011 Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, SC, with a pair of victories on Thursday, March 10, against Edinboro (Pa.) and St. Joseph (Ind.).
The wins pushed the Tigers' record to 9-2 overall on the 2010-11 season, including a perfect 6-0 during the annual southern trek.
Against Edinboro, Wittenberg got off to a strong start by sweeping the doubles courts and then carried the momentum into the singles matches. Freshmen Tyler Strong (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual), Sam Wilke (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) and Joseph Marra (Great Falls, Mont./Great Falls) were all double-winners in the match.
St. Joseph provided much more significant competition later in the day. Despite weather problems that forced multiple delays, the Tigers pulled out a narrow 5-3 victory that ended after midnight.
Strong and Wilke were double-winners again, as was sophomore Sergio Fishkin (Minsk, Belarus). Strong won at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles, while Wilke and Fishkin paired up at No. 3 doubles. Wilke added a win at No. 4 singles and Fishkin won at No. 3 singles.
