Tigers Roll Past Wilmington And Cedarville
Wittenberg moves to 4-0 with a pair of 8-1 home court victories.
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg men's tennis team improved to 4-0 on the young 2012-13 season with a pair of decisive victories over Wilmington and Cedarville.
Playing with a split lineup, the Tigers comfortably handled the Quakers and Yellow Jackets by matching 8-1 margins. Combined with a pair of 9-0 wins on Sept. 8 over Indiana-East, again using the split squad format, Wittenberg is a perfect 4-0 heading into a busy weekend that includes the two-day flighted Wittenberg Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Against Wilmington, the Tigers did not drop a game in the first two doubles matches before collecting a default victory on the third court. Moving to singles, freshman Stas Pakhomov (Richmond, British Columbia) won at No. 1, junior Jonathan Mueller (Bexley, Ohio/Hartley) was a winner at No. 2 and freshman Dennis Gleason (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles) picked up the victory at No. 3. Two of the positions were again forfeited by Wilmington.
Against Cedarville, the Tigers pulled off another sweep, although they were pushed much harder. Wittenberg put the match away with five wins in six singles matches.
Double-winners against the Yellow Jackets were junior Sergio Fishkin (Minsk, Belarus), junior Sam Wilke (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) and sophomore Sasha Topolyanskiy (Moscow, Russia).
