Tigers Kick Off Second Half Of Season With Win Over Daemen
Alexey Topolyanskiy and Stas Pakhomov are double-winners as Tigers remain unbeaten in match play.
DAYTON, Ohio - Their home courts may be covered in snow, but the Wittenberg men's tennis team got the second half of the 2013-14 season started anyway with a 6-2 victory over Daemen in a match played at Five Seasons Racquet Club.
The win was Wittenberg's third of the season without a defeat. Daemen fell to 2-4.
The Tigers jumped on top with two wins in the three doubles matches. Junior Alexey Topolyanskiy (Moscow, Russia/School 712) and sophomore Stas Pakhomov (Richmond, British Columbia/Sir Winston Churchill) paired up to take the second doubles match by an 8-5 score, and freshman Juan Mena (Quito, Ecuador/Colego Amrcano/Quito) teamed with sophomore Jialang Woo (Shanghai, China/Yew Chung Int. School) to pick up an 8-1 decision at the No. 3 position.
Topolyanskiy added a straight sets victory at No. 1 singles, while Pakhomov was a winner at No. 2. Freshman Akbar Tiwana (Lahore, Pakistan/Atchison School) won a pro set at No. 5 singles due to time constraints, and freshman Sean Munson (Chicago, Ill./Roycemore) rounded things out with a three-set win at No. 6.
The No. 3 singles match was suspended due to time constraints since the match was already decided.
