Tigers Split A Pair With Loss To DePauw, Win Over Rose-Hulman
After getting swept by NCAC West rival, Wittenberg rallies past Rose-Hulman to gain split for the day.
GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Wittenberg Tigers returned to the Midwest to play a pair of matches in the DePauw Indoor Tennis and Track Center and ended up with a split decision, losing to DePauw 9-0 before beating Rose-Hulman 5-4.
The day's results left Wittenberg with an overall record of 8-2, heading into the spring season home opener against Ohio Northern on March 19.
Wittenberg opened the day with a sweep at the hands of DePauw, a perennial national powerhouse and one of the top contenders again this year in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). But the Tigers rallied in the second match of the day with a narrow decision against RHIT.
In the doubles competition, Rose-Hulman took two of the three matches. The Tigers' lone point came at the No. 2 position as sophomore Stas Pakhomov (Richmond, British Columbia/Sir Winston Churchill) teamed with freshman Akbar Tiwana (Lahore, Pakistan/Aitchison) to win 8-4.
Wittenberg responded by winning four of the six singles matches. Freshman Juan Mena (Quito, Ecuador/Colego Amrcano-Quito) was a winner at No. 2, senior Tyler Strong (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) added a win at No. 4, sophomore Mitchell Patterson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) took the victory at No. 5, and sophomore Jialang Woo (Shanghai, China/Yew Chung Int. School) rounded things out with a win at No. 6.
