John DeVito Named Men’s And Women’s Tennis Head Coach
SPRINGFIELD, OH – After earning All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) honors as a tennis student-athlete at Wittenberg, serving as an assistant coach on a staff that earned league-wide recognition, and guiding the program as a part-time head coach through an unprecedented year of uncertainty, John DeVito, Wittenberg class of 2023, has officially been named head coach of Wittenberg University Men’s and Women’s Tennis.
“We are excited that John has agreed to lead our tennis program into the future,” said Wittenberg Vice President and Director of Athletics and Recreation Brian Agler ‘80. “John loves Wittenberg. He was the heart and soul of our program as a player, and we are confident that his passion and work ethic will transition into is coaching career.
“John’s future is extremely bright,” Agler added. “We look forward to building our program back with a competitive spirit, with John leading the way.”
As an assistant coach for both teams during the 2023-24 season, DeVito helped the Tiger women’s team to records of 14-3 overall and 4-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) en route to a third-place finish in the final league standings. Three players earned All-NCAC honors following the season, and the Tiger coaching staff was named NCAC Women's Tennis Coaching Staff of the Year. On the men’s side, Ethan Libby earned All-NCAC honors.
From 2019 to 2023, DeVito was a member of the Tiger men’s tennis program. Playing primarily the No. 1 singles and doubles positions, DeVito accumulated more than 50 career wins and received All-NCAC honors after his sophomore year.
“I would like to thank Brian Agler and the rest of Wittenberg’s Department of Athletics and Recreation for the opportunity to become the next head coach of the men’s and women’s tennis program,” DeVito said. “Coaching collegiate tennis at Wittenberg University has been a goal of mine for the last few years, and I am blessed to make this dream come true. As the head coach, I look forward to rebuilding the program and pushing it to new heights. Tiger Up!”
DeVito graduated from Wittenberg with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. He has served in several different positions for Wittenberg’s Office of Student Development in the COMPASS: Sweet Success Center. Most recently, DeVito has served as the assistant director of career engagement.
A native of Canandaigua, NY, DeVito currently resides in Springfield.
