Men’s Volleyball Gets Back to Winning Ways With 3-1 Road Win
MOUNT VERNON, OH – Wittenberg Men's Volleyball dealt Mount Vernon Nazarene its first loss of the season, 3-1, in a non-conference contest Thursday, Jan. 29, on the road at Ariel Arena.
Three players registered double digits in kills as the Tigers outhit the Cougars .368 to just .052 en route to a four-set victory by set scores of 25-12, 25-21, 23-25, and 25-10.
Wittenberg came out strong in the first set, turning in a hitting percentage of .367, and was even better in set two at .458. Both teams struggled in set three and with the Cougars getting the upper hand. But the Tigers were determined to end things in the fourth set, attacking at a blistering .652 attack percentage while holding Mount Vernon to just 10 points.
Eli Halverson (Hamilton, OH / Badin) led the team in kills with 14 on 31 total attacks. He also had two service aces, four digs, two blocks, and 17 total points. Michael Yurk (Indianapolis, IN / Bishop Chatard) finished with 12 kills on 26 total attacks. He also grabbed seven digs and 12 points. Reese Monnin (Xenia, OH / Carroll) added 10 kills on 16 total attacks for 13.5 points. He also led the team in blocks with five. The junior's output in blocks allowed him to surpass the 100-mark in blocks for his career as he now has a total of 104.
Gavin Hagerty (Fishers, IN / Fishers) led the team in assists with 28. He also had a team-high 12 digs. Carson Hill (Liberty Township, OH / Lakota East) tallied 11 assists and four digs.
With the win, Wittenberg improves to 4-1 on the season, while Mount Vernon Nazarene drops to 3-1. The Tigers now lead the series 2-1 against the Cougars after playing them in 2023 and 2024.
