Men’s Volleyball Skates Past Mount St. Joseph For 3-0 MCVL Victory
SPRINGFIELD, OH – Capturing its third win in a row, Wittenberg Men's Volleyball skated past visiting Mount St. Joseph, 3-0, Tuesday night, March 3, in another Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) matchup at Pam Evans Smith Arena, part of the Health, Wellness & Athletics Complex.
A contest that marks the beginning of seven straight MCVL matches for Wittenberg, the Tigers came out strong, taking down the Lions in quick fashion in the first two sets, winning in scores of 25-12 and 25-16. Witt jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first set and was challenged little en route to the win. In set two, the Tigers took the 3-0 lead in never looked back.
Looking like it was going to be an easy three-set win, the Lions fought back in Set 3, forcing a back-and-forth battle with Mount St. Joseph. With the Lions leading 22-17 lead, the Tigers found their roar, going on a 10-3 run to top the Lions0, 27-25, and secure the sweep.
With the win, Wittenberg improves to 13-5 overall and 2-1 in the MCVL. The Tigers are now 8-3 at home. It was Mount St. Joseph's third loss in a row, and it droppred the Lions to 3-6 overall and 0-3 MCVL.
Calvin currently sits atop the league at 4-0, followed by Wabash at 3-1, then a crowd that includes Wittenberg, Baldwin Wallace, Trine, and Mount Union, all at 2-1.
Zach Newton (Morgantown, IN / Franklin Community) led the team in kills with nine and in points with 10. Eli Halverson (Hamilton, OH / Badin) added six kills and eight points. He also led the team in digs with seven and in blocks with two. Gavin Hagerty (Fishers, IN / Fishers) led the team in assists with 15 and Carson Hill (Liberty Township, OH / Lakota East) added nine. Hill also led the team in service aces with two. Hagerty added six digs.
