Wittenberg Takes Down Albion, Falls To Misericordia On Day Two
KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Wittenberg softball team got the 2010 season started Saturday with a split outing, winning the opener with St. Francis by a 5-2 margin, then dropping the late game with St. Benedict by a close 4-3 final score. The Tigers are 1-1 after one day, and continue the Rebel Spring Games Sunday, March 7.
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - On Day Two of the Wittenberg softball team's participation in the Rebel Spring Games, the Tigers defeated Albion by a score of 10-1, but dropped a matchup with Misericordia 9-0 later in the day to move to 2-2 on the young season.
Wittenberg, 1-1 after a split on Saturday, charged into the game with the Albion Britons with bats blazing. In the bottom of the first inning, senior outfielder Cameron Catalfu (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) put the Tigers' first home run of the season over the center field fence, but the real explosion came in the second inning, when the team recorded seven runs, all with two outs. After Albion set the table with two errors and a hit batter, senior third baseman Jade Chivington (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine) racked up two runs batted in, senior Brooke Boswell (Hamilton, Ohio/Fairfield) pushed one across, and sophomore Tori Amicon (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) ended the onslaught with two RBI. Albion allowed two runners to cross on a fielding error to round out the Tigers' scoring in the second.
The Britons scored their only run in the third inning while holding the Tigers dormant, but Wittenberg tallied two in the fourth to move into run-rule territory. The runs came when senior Amanda Delagrange (Akron, Ohio/Firestone) drove in Chivington, and Boswell scored as the Britons were busy dealing with Delagrange on the basepaths.
In all, the Tigers totaled 10 runs on 10 hits and three Albion errors. Chivington went on to finish the day 3-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored, adding a 1-for-3 outing in the late game. Misericordia's talented pitching held the Tigers to four hits in the loss, Chivington joined by Catalfu, Boswell and sophomore Brooklyn Cox (Dayton, Ohio/Vandalia Butler) on the hit list.
Misericordia used five runs in the third inning to push the game out of range after scoring one in the second, and went on to score one in the fourth and finish the game with two in the fifth.
In the circle for the Tigers, Boswell took the complete-game win against Albion in five innings, allowing just two hits to score one run, unearned, with two strikeouts. senior Melisa Shock (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) absorbed the loss in the second game in two and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on five hits and two strikeouts.
The Tigers return to the field Monday, March 8, with a 1 p.m. matchup with Benedictine, followed by a 3 p.m. tilt with fellow Ohio team Defiance College.
