Mount St. Joseph
CINCINNATI, Ohio — For the first time since 2008, the Wittenberg softball team scored 30 runs in a doubleheader as the Tiger offense continued its recent surge in a sweep of Mount St. Joseph.
The wins moved the Tigers to 15-7 overall and provided plenty of momentum heading into Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference opener at Ohio Wesleyan. Mount St. Joseph dropped to 2-13 on the season.
On April 19, 2008, Wittenberg defeated Oberlin by scores of 21-2 and 10-2. It took nearly four years to reach the 30-run plateau again, as the 2012 edition of the Tigers pounded out 29 hits over the two wins to push their modest win streak to five in a row.
In the opener, a 12-run third inning put the game out of reach quickly as the Tigers scored at least one run in all five innings. The offensive barrage made a winner out of freshman Julia Williams (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South), who allowed three hits and two runs (one earned) before giving way to senior Anna Kvartunas (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic), who allowed one hit and two runs (one earned) in the final two innings.
All nine batters in the Wittenberg line-up scored at least one run, collected at least one base hit and drove in at least one run. Among the highlights were a 3-for-3, three runs scored and three RBIs performance from senior Katelyn Davis (Bethesda, Ohio/Union Local) and four RBIs from Williams, who jumpstarted the 12-run outburst with a three-run triple.
The nightcap offered more of the same as Wittenberg scored seven runs in the third to push its lead to 10-0. Eight of the nine Tigers in the line-up banged out at least one base hit, led by sophomore Laura Rose (Riverside, Ohio/Stebbins) with two home runs and three RBIs.
While the offense was a big story, the pitching of sophomore Rachel Ross (Westerville, Ohio/South) may be of greater significance. She tossed her third shutout in a row, allowing just four hits while going the distance for her seventh complete game of the 2012 season. Ross has not allowed a run — earned or unearned — in 24 innings, dating back to a three-run fourth inning by Wilmington.
Ross has four solo shutouts to her credit so far in 2012 to go along with a shared shutout on the season's opening day against Eastern Nazarene. She improved to 7-3 with the win.
