BLOOMINGTON, Illinois—Wittenberg softball salvaged their weekend in a big way on Sunday, as Senior pitcher Chelsea Zang tossed her second career no-hitter against #6 Illinois Wesleyan. Zang dominated the Titans with a five-strikeout performance, with the Titans only baserunner coming via a single walk issued by Zang. The last no-hitter that Zang threw came in her freshman year, as the Cincinnati, Ohio native no-hit Wooster on April 1, 2015. The Tigers managed to scrape across four runs in the win, scoring in the first, second and fourth innings. The Tigers now improve to 10-14 overall, with a week of NCAC action ahead.
OFFENSIVE NOTES: Abby Curnutte doubled to right-field, scoring Elise Freeland in the bottom of the first to get the Tigers on the board. In the bottom of the second innings, Alex Gibson homered to deep center-field, as Victoria Toetz crossed home on the long-ball to give Wittenberg a 3-0 lead. The bottom of the fourth for Wittenberg featured another Tiger long-ball, as Katy Baumgartner sent a Titan pitch over the left-field wall, as the Tigers took a 4-0 lead. Wittenberg left six on base on Sunday, as Freeland paced the Tigers with a two-hit day, and Gibson led the Tigers with two RBI's. Wittenberg struck-out three times on the day, while drawing two walks. Five of the Tiger's six hits in the no-hit win went for extra bases (three-doubles and two home runs.)
NO-HITTER: Zang faced 22 hitters, one over the minimum, on Sunday, as the Titans drew a walk with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Stellar defense behind Zang aided the senior's second no-hitter, as the game ended on a looking strikeout. Abby Haab tossed the Tiger's last no-hitter, as the fellow senior threw a perfect game on March 23, 2017 against Capital, and threw a perfect game against Allegheny the year prior. Zang's last no-hitter came against conference foe Wooster, as the Tigers now boast multiple starting pitchers with multiple no-hitters to their name.
