Tigers Drop Two to Denison Despite Superb Pitching
GRANVILLE, OH - The Tigers traveled to Denison for a key early-season North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader, and the Wittenberg bats were quiet for a second straight day. Both games ended in the same score, as Denison, the preseason NCAC favorite, won both games by a score of 2-0. After the losses, Wittenberg now falls to 18-6 (2-2 NCAC), while Denison improves to 15-9 (4-0 NCAC).
In game one, Samantha Zungri (Canal Winchester, OH / Canal Winchester) started in the circle and threw all six innings. She allowed only two runs on six hits and struck out six batters. At the plate, however, the Wittenberg batters struggled with just four hits up on the board. Throughout all seven inngings, the Tigers only advanced runners into scoring position twice, and they were unable to capitalize on either opportunity.
Team Leaders
- Four different Tiger batters recorded a hit in the game: Hanna Ecker (Heath, OH / Heath), Meghan McCans (Arcanum, OH / Arcanum), Gada Bryant (Westville, IL / Bismark Henning) and Audrey Fyffe (Springfield, OH / Kenton Ridge).
- McCans was the only player on either team to steal a base in the game.
Team Comparison
- Denison led in every statistical category, except in stolen bases, as the Tigers had one to Denison's none and the Tigers left five funners on base to only four for the Big Red.
Game Two
Wittenberg pitching was outstanding again in game two. Julie Hall (Powell, OH / Bishop Watterson) started in the circle and tossed five and one third innings, allowing two runs on only three hits. She finished with two walks and struck out two batters. Lilly Shaw (Washington Courthouse, OH / Washington) threw the last two-thirds of an inning to finish out the game, and she only gave up a single hit.
The Tigers really struggled at the plate against Denison pitcher, Sydney Silverstein, as she hurled a no-hitter. Wittenberg was able to draw five walks in the game and runners were in scoring position at second base and third base in the seventh inning. However, similar to the opener, the Tigers were unable to find the timely hit to push the runners across the plate.
Game Two Team Leaders
- Ecker and Kaela May (Tipp City, OH / Tippecanoe) led the team in walks with two each.
- Bryant and Diana Quevedo (La Quinta, CA / La Quinta) each stole a base, while Denison did not record a steal in the game.
Game Two Team Comparison
- Denison commited one error compared to none for the Tigers, and Wittenberg drew five walks to only two for the Big Red.
- The Tigers also were able to turn three double plays, while Denison only turned two throughout the second game.
The Tiger softball team will return to action on Friday, April 11th, when they host the Kenyon Owls in another NCAC doubleheader. First pitch at Dillahunt Field is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
