Wittenberg Softball Completes Facility Renovations
As the Wittenberg University softball program prepares for its third season under the direction of Head Coach Ashley Goodwin, the Tigers are building on two years of momentum—both in performance and in facility improvements at Betty Doughman Dillahunt Field, where the team practices and plays its home games.
In recent months, a full renovation of the outfield at Dillahunt Field has been completed, representing a major investment in the program’s future. The Tigers head into Year 3 under the direction of Goodwin and her staff hoping to build upon back-to-back winning campaigns, record-setting individual and team statistical performances, and a renewed competitive presence in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC).
Completed in October 2025, the outfield renovations include:
- Full reconstruction of the outfield surface, including deep cultivation, laser grading, and installation of a 75% soil / 25% sand mix for improved drainage and playability;
- 28,000 sq. ft. of new outfield sod, dramatically upgrading the safety, consistency, and appearance of the field;
- A full outfield irrigation system, providing long-term control over surface maintenance;
- Infrastructure enhancements, including sleeve pipe installation and necessary groundwork to support future field care.
With the project now complete, the Tigers take the field in 2026 with one of the finest top surfaces in the conference.
“This renovation is a major step toward building the championship-level program we envision here at Wittenberg,” said Goodwin, who has a two-year record as head coach of 48-35 after serving as the program’s assistant coach from 2019-2023. “Our team is built on grit and hard work, and now our athletes have a field that reflects those same standards. This upgrade enhances our daily training environment and sends a powerful message to recruits that Wittenberg Softball is on the rise. We’re building something special.”
Plans for facility improvements are ongoing, starting with a fundraising campaign to replace the current outfield scoreboard, an outdated bulb-style model, with a modern, digital display that matches the quality of the renovated outfield. Installation of an improved scoreboard will greatly enhance the game-day experience for student-athletes and spectators by providing greater game details in an easier-to-read digital presentation.
