Cold-Shooting Tigers Fall To Baldwin Wallace
Wittenberg's offensive struggles stymie potential comeback in 66-55 decision against Baldwin Wallace.
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets pulled away from the cold-shooting Wittenberg Tigers for a 66-55 non-conference victory.
Wittenberg shot just 32 percent from the field, including 17 percent from three-point range. Just as significantly, the Tigers managed just 14-of-29 from the free throw line as they dropped to 1-3 on the young season.
Baldwin Wallace fared better offensively, particularly in the second half as the Yellow Jackets (3-1) hit 11-of-24 shots from the field and 3-of-6 from long distance. BW put the game away at the free throw line, converting 12-of-20 in the second half.
The Tigers held an early four-point advantage after a nine-point burst that was capped by a lay-up from sophomore Amber Lara (Oak Park, Ill./River Forest) at the 14:47 mark of the first half. Wittenberg went cold from that point, however, allowing BW to respond with a 15-5 run that eventually settled into a 29-25 halftime advantage.
Over the final 20 minutes, the Tigers would get no closer than five points after allowing the first six points of the second half. BW's Audrey Smolik scored all of her game-high 16 points in the second half to spark the Yellow Jackets.
Wittenberg was paced by sophomore Enri Small (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls) with 12 points and four rebounds, while junior Amber Rice (South Charleston, Ohio/Southeastern) added 10 points. Lara chipped in with nine points and five boards off the bench, and sophomore Katelyn Haralamos (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) filled the stats sheet with seven points, four assists and three rebounds.
The loss kicked off a busy week for the Tigers, who hit the road for games at Earlham and Oberlin on Wednesday and Saturday. The latter is Wittenberg's 2012-13 North Coast Athletic Conference opener.
