Tigers Fall to DePauw Despite Comeback Bid
Greencastle, IN-The Tigers traveled to Greencastle to take on DePauw and get back on the right track after losing their last game to Ohio Wesleyan. Unfortunately, despite a comeback bid going into halftime, Wittenberg was unable to fight all the way back. DePauw took the win, 79-70, to move to 10-4 (4-0 NCAC) as Wittenberg fell to 10-5 (2-2 NCAC).
After the first quarter, Wittenberg was already in a hole, with DePauw leading 21-11. The host Tigers then built a 16-point lead less than two minutes into the second quarter. Shortly after, Wittenberg went on one of their best runs of the season. Taryn Cash (Cincinnati, OH / Princeton) hit back-to-back jumpers, Madi Barnett (Cincinnati, OH / Kings) converted on a three-point play, and Kelsey Ragan (Whitehouse, OH / Anthony Wayne) came down the court and hit a three to cut the lead to six. Ragan hit another three after Barnett drew two charges on the defensive end in consecutive possesions, Karsen Karlblom (Crystal Lake, IL / Prairie Ridge) nailed a three to tie the game up at 27. After going back and forth for the rest of the first half, it was all square at 33 apiece at halftime.
Four minutes into the third quarter, it was still even at 40 when DePauw scored six straight and was able to hold off Wittenberg for the reaminder of the game. After the third quarter, the DePauw lead was up to nine and despite Wittenberg drawing within four point multiple times, DePauw ended up taking the win. The Wittenberg team still put up impressive performances, with Cash dropping 20 points to lead the team, as well as dishing five assists to share the team lead in that category. Riane Burton (Houston, TX / Cypress Ranch) dropped 16 of her own and led the team in rebounds with 10 for a double-double. Jazmyn Gaines-Burns (Bladensburg, MD / Elizabeth Seton) was tied for the assists lead with five dimes of her own, while also dropping six points on the night.
The Tigers' next game will be at home against Oberlin on Saturday, January 18, with tip-off scheduled for 2:00 p.m. against the Yeowomen at Pam Evans Smith Arena.
