Tigers Check In Fifth At BSC Southern Shootout
Taking on some of the top teams in the south, Wittenberg places fifth in strong 12-team field.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Wittenberg Tigers got an up-close look at the some of the finest teams south of the Mason-Dixon line at the BSC Southern Shootout, hosted by Birmingham Southern, finishing fifth in a strong 12-team field.
Rhodes and Cumberlands shared the top spot with a two-day total of 603, followed by Lee at 611 and Oglethorpe at 621. The Tigers finished fifth overall - and third among NCAA Division III programs - with a final score of 634, six strokes clear of the host team.
Wittenberg opened with a 312 in the first round on the par-71, 5801-yard course at Highland Park Golf Club. A second-round team score of 322, however, moved the Tigers down one spot in the final standings.
Individually, Wittenberg was paced by sophomore Maggie Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) with rounds of 75 and 78 to finish 10th with a 153. It was the third straight tournament in which Smith was Wittenberg's top finisher.
Junior Nicole Waers (Canton, Ohio/Perry) matched Smith's score in the first round but slipped to an 85 on Day 2 to finish 30th with a score of 160. She was followed closely by sophomore Allie Lawwill (Springboro, Ohio/Middletown) and junior Carolyn Wong (Naperville, Ill./Central) with matching two-day totals of 161, good for 32nd place.
Freshman Macy Hubbard (Mason, Ohio/Mason) rounded things out with a 167 to place 39th.
