Tigers Top Field At Ohio Wesleyan's Laura Bump Invitational
After two second-place finishes, Wittenberg enjoys breakthrough by taking top spot amongst 18 teams in field.
DELAWARE, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers had come close several times before in the 2013-14 season, but all they had to show for their efforts was a pair of runner-up finishes and four other top-fives. All that changed at Ohio Wesleyan's Laura Bump Invitational as the Tigers put together back-to-back solid rounds en route to a 10-stroke victory.
The Tigers went low on Day 1 with a 308 and followed that with a 326 on a day when winds were gusting near 40 miles per hour on the par-71, 5,834-yard course at Mill Creek Golf Club. It was good enough for Wittenberg to hold on for a total score of 634, 10 shots clear of Madonna and 12 better than Denison.
Individually, Wittenberg was paced by freshman Macy Hubbard (Mason, Ohio/Mason), who finished third with a two-day score of 156. Close behind was sophomore Maggie Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore), who placed fourth with a score of 157.
Sophomore Allie Lawwill (Springboro, Ohio/Middletown) also placed in the top 10, carding rounds of 78 and 81 to finish seventh. Also scoring for the Tigers were juniors Carolyn Wong (Naperville, Ill./Central) in 11th with a 164 and Nicole Waers (Canton, Ohio/Perry) in 20th with a 169.
Two other Tigers saw action in the tournament as individuals, and both also posted top-20 finishes. Junior Rachel Steiner (Hamilton, Ohio/Lakota West) placed seventh with a score of 159 and senior Deanna Michalishyn (Mason, Ohio/Mason) rounded things out in 18th place with a 168.
